WordPress Configurations – Setting a static home page

Posted on October 25 2009 by admin

When implementing WordPress on your website, as it is a blog content management system, the landing home page is the blog page as default.  In many instances, you may want to use a more traditional static page as the Home page (just like the Torian IT Solutions site).  In order to set a static home page in WordPress do the following,

Log into the WordPress administrator panel by going to www.yoursite.com/wp-admin

Go to the Pages option and then create two WordPress Pages.

Title one as “Home” (or whatever name you want to use) – This will be your “static” front page.

Set the template for the “Home” to the default template or any custom template.

Add any content that you would like to have on your “Home” page.

Publish the Page.

Create the second page and name it “Blog”, “Articles” or “News” etc.  This page will be used to show alla place-holder for showing the Posts on your site.

Do not use a custom Page template for this page!

DO NOT add content to the Blog Page. Leave it blank. Any content here will be ignored — only the Title is used.

Publish the Page.

Next, you need to change the initial page to be the Home page.  Go to Settings > Reading.

In the ’Front Page Displays’ section select ’A static page’ and choose the ‘Front Page’ as the first page you have just created.

Select the Blog page as the ‘Posts Page’.

Save changes.

Hi Saurooon, the Torian Wordpress site has only been up and running for the last week replacing an old html site. I plan to update daily with news covering training, project management and web software information. Hopefully any info I add is useful to others.

Does it cost much to make a blog?

  7. admin says:

You can create a blog for free on a number of blogging sites such as http://www.blogger.com. If you would prefer to have your own site with informational pages and blog pages similar to this one, then you just need the outlay for a domain and hosting with a database. http://Www.toriansolutions.com uses WordPress to create the structure of the site and this is a free application that you can download and then install onto your domain. You do need to be somewhat technically minded to set up and build the initial site but if you need assistance, then there are companies such like ourselves that can set up a template site for a few hundred pounds. The more complex the WordPress site, the more time is required and the costs increase.
